TL;DR:
- Original Price: $9.99
- Pieces: 78
- Minifigure(s): Celeste
- Sticker Sheet: No
- Pros: Cute, modular
- Cons: Small piece count, but it makes good use of them
Assembly:
Leftover Pieces- Interesting Techniques:
- The telescope, reminiscent of the accessory from CMF Series 27's Telescope Kid, is a larger version, and feels like the real thing, scaled for an adult minifigure.
- As advertised on the back of the box, the use of Mario baseplates makes for a modular setup, allowing different arrangements simply by removing the 2x4 green plates that link them together underneath.
- Interesting Pieces:
- The tree trunk (reddish brown round 2x2 with four roots), seems to be new for Animal Crossing sets, and makes for simple but effective trees, especially when paired with the 3x3x2 and 2x2x2 cone pieces.
- The new peony rose piece in lavender, is charming; I can see it being useful for a lot of things beyond just florals (a lampshade, for example).
- I'm unable to determine which constellation is actually depicted on the printed tile, it seems to be combination of Hercules and Pegasus, but is likely just a made-up one intended to be more evocative than realistic. Still, it is cute and a good addition.
- Pain Points:
- The instructions show "bag 1" but no "bag 2," and the set itself came with two clear bags (as shown in the picture below TL;DR: above)
- As is often common in the sets designed for younger audiences, the sub-builds are each numbered starting at 1, making it easy to lose one's place. Perhaps this is meant to keep total the number of steps from appearing so daunting?
- Step 16 has us place the combination of two yellow telephone-shaped slopes & 2x2 plate on top of the arch/inverted arch combination, but care is required to keep from snapping the build in half...as I did.
- My Modifications:
- Making use of the Mario baseplates, I rearranged them for a more scenic arrangement, with a suggestion of stars reflected in a lake or pond in the background:
I don't know anything about Animal Crossing lore (having played it for all of 5 minutes), but from the attention to detail I can imagine there's a lot this set gets right in evoking the character details; I've also seen mentioned that the brick-built star and moon are almost-perfect copies of in-game furniture you can get in Celeste's theme, so there's that.
Approaching the build as a build, it is a bit lacking. The piece count is low for a set of this price, especially containing only one minifigure, and apart from the tea set, peony pieces, and constellation tile, there aren't many specialty elements either. The appearance of being larger than it is is due primarily to the size of the moon and tree sub-builds and the footprint afforded by the Mario baseplates. It's a cute set, but a speedy build, and seems almost designed to be used as display filler between larger Animal Crossing sets. There's nothing objectively wrong with the set itself, it just seems to be a bit less than it might have been.
