TL;DR:
- Original Price: $10.99
- Pieces: 77
- Minifigure(s): Spider-Man, Dr. Octopus (Venomized)
- Sticker Sheet: No
- Pros: Solid little motorcycle, nice street vignette
- Cons: Quick build
Leftover Pieces
- Interesting Techniques:
- Doc Ock's arms are simple but very effective. The light grey mechanical claws have enough friction against the dark grey mechanical arm & bar holder pieces to hold any pose, and also support the weight of the minifig.
- Interesting Pieces:
- It's always good to get another lamp post piece, since it's hard to replicate their look with a brick-built setup.
- Yellow banana peel (rubbery)
- Technic wheel fork
- Neck bracket with 4 angled bar handles
- The 3L Technic pin, paired with the wheel fork pieces, makes for an almost-frictionless axle and a swift-rolling motorcycle.
For being such a small and inexpensive build, this set makes a pretty efficient use of its small piece count. The biggest plus for this is its play functionality: it's easy to envision kids (or adults) making up stories where Spidey chases Doc around the city, trying to recover the gems while dodging the dynamite and fish that Doc's arms keep throwing at him. While I really like Doc's arms, the figure itself is distracting. I've never been a fan of Venom, and having him take over 3/4 of the doctor's face (half of the front and the entire back) actually feels like it reduces the storytelling possibilities. It would have been better if it had been more of a Quirrell/Voldemort setup, where the front face is all Doc Ock and the back is Venom: that way the transformation/takeover can be part of the story...and if someone doesn't like Venom they can keep that side of the face hidden behind the hairpiece.
While this might not be the sort of thing you get for an AFOL who already has a ton of Spidey stuff, it would be a great gift for a kid who's just getting started with Legos or superheroes.
