Some interesting pieces and part uses, but a bit of an awkward final result.
TL;DR:
- Original Price: $9.99
- Pieces: 149
- Minifigure(s): No
- Sticker Sheet: No
- Pros: Some interesting pieces, Good poseability and some creative part uses
- Cons: Awkward look overall
Assembly:
Build #1 - Red Dragon
Build #2 - Red Parrot
Build #3 - Red Fish
- Interesting Steps:
- Build 1, step 31: the light bluish grey 1x1 rounds with bar handle allow for the horns to be added at angles—though it's tricky getting them pivoted to the same angle.
- Build 2, step 35: just a callout on the different curves used, red 1x3x2 nested within the red 1x6x3.33, and the bright light yellow 1x6x3.33 offset by one stud to arch over the top of the red one.
- Build 3, worth noting that the fish uses the fewest parts of the set, as you can see below
This is an acceptable set, good for the size. The builds have some interesting part use (like the 1x1 round with bar, mentioned above) but feel like they could have had more polish. The wings/fins, for example, use black 4x4 plates with 3x3 cutouts; these pieces come in many other colors, including medium azure (the same as the tiles used on their surface) or dark azure (if a bit of contrast was wanted). On that note it would be great if Lego released the ball joint elements in anything other than greys or black...but I also understand that that could be a part of the design language, a way to differentiate them from other pieces.
