76382 Hogwarts Moment - Transfiguration Class LEGO Review - Harry Potter, 2021

Less cool than it could be, but possibilities for improvement via MOC.

TL;DR:

  • Original Price:  $29.99
  • Pieces: 241
  • Minifigure(s): Hermione Granger, Professor McGonagall, Ron Weasley
  • Sticker Sheet: Yes
  • Pros: creative build and good look
  • Cons: expensive and the figures don't fit inside when closed

Assembly:

Bag #1 - Ron Weasley, Professor McGonagall, book cover, furniture

Bag #2 - Hermione Granger, walls

  • Interesting Techniques:
    • It's always interesting seeing how these sets are designed so the furniture can be packed in, along with the fold-out walls. I have to wonder if there's a better way, however, perhaps adding a second story to take advantage of all of the empty space...
  • Interesting Pieces:
    • description
  • Pain Points:
    • The minifigures don't fit within the book when it's closed, which is why there are 2x4 tiles with 2 studs on the top of the book's "pages" (the underside of the lectern built with bag 2) so they can be mounted on top of the closed book.

Just like in my previous review of the Defense Class, I have mixed feelings about these sets. I love the idea of something opening up into something else (growing up with Micro Machines and Transformers and yes, even Polly Pocket), but the execution feels...half brilliant and half hodgepodge. The little yellow 1x1 round tile acting as both a bit of cheese for Scabbers and as a stop for the storage placement of the table, for example, is a great solution. But having to remember which furniture piece goes where and in what orientation is less than ideal.

As mentioned above, a lot of the space in this set (especially in contrast to the higher arches and double-fold walls of the previous set) is given over to storage, which makes the final build feel half-finished. An easy solution would be to add a second floor and have the furniture pieces be sized to fit within the arcades on both levels; that way they can be placed wherever without needing to consult a diagram.

Score (out of 5 🧱):

  • Total: 🧱🧱🧱🧱
