71805 Jay's Mech Battle Pack LEGO Review - Ninjago, 2024

A small set, but lots of minifigs.

TL;DR:

  • Original Price:  $9.99
  • Pieces: 78
  • Minifigure(s): Jay, Lloyd, Wolf mask warrior, Wolf mask guard
  • Sticker Sheet: No
  • Pros: Several minifigs, poseable mech
  • Cons: Small for the price

Assembly:

 Leftover Pieces

  • Interesting Pieces:
    • The black 1x2 plate with tow ball on both ends is a good addition to the ball and socket pieces (sadly we're still missing a similar one with the socket on both ends).
    • The pearl gold jagged blade and pearl gold armor plate pieces are nicely angular, and could be useful for all manner of decor or greebling.

  • Pain Points:
    • This mech saves on parts by having one arm end in two tile shooters, and the other rather anemically in a 1x2 with two clips to hold the weapon's shaft. This is effective, but leaves it looking rather truncated.
  • Play Features:
    • The mech is pretty nicely poseable, and has the tile shooters on its left arm.

  • Overall:  It's a small set, and were it not for the four minifigures, I could see this being a polybag instead of a box. As it is, we get the exclusive Jay Dragons Rising minifigure (which does look nice), and three others that are in 3, 4, and (in the case of the Wolf mask warrior) 9 other sets. Lloyd's clothes are nice, and the two wolf mask guys would be good for army building purposes. The mech is the only build in the set, and that goes pretty quickly. I do appreciate how many joints it has, which make it easier to pose dynamically as the two ninja battle their masked opponents; that said, the stubby arms are a bit of a shortfall. I still expect to do a monograph posting at some point, comparing and contrasting the different mechs in my collection, and this definitely will be among the builds considered.
  • This makes for a good-enough set, the sort of thing you get on sale, or because you could use a few extra guys, or because you know your nephew is into Ninjago and it's his birthday soon. It's not a bad set, just unimpressive, especially at full price.
