30382 Baby Velociraptor Playpen LEGO Review - Jurassic World, 2018

A small but mighty dino set.

TL;DR:

  • Original Price:  $3.97
  • Pieces: 48
  • Minifigure(s): Baby velociraptor
  • Sticker Sheet: No
  • Pros: Velociraptor, low original price
  • Cons: High resale price, no specialty/unusual parts

Assembly:

 Leftover Pieces

  • Interesting Techniques:
    • The water dispenser assembly on the left of the enclosure is a nice shorthand, as is the "mechanical arm" lowering a drumstick.
  • Interesting Pieces:
    • The baby velociraptor is justifiably the star of this set.
  • Pain Points:
    • There's no way to secure the bone in the enclosure. A 1x1 reddish brown plate with an upward-facing clip would have been an easy addition, and a good way to keep all parts in place.

• Overall:  This is what I look for in polybag sets: enough pieces to furnish a quick-but-satisfying build, a good number of parts I can use elsewhere (like the telescope pieces), and a specialty part that I definitely want. In this case, that would be the baby velociraptor. which is a charming little mold (and probably part of why this set seems to have doubled in price on the resale market). There weren't really any surprises in this build, nor is it super impressive as a display piece—though I can see it having a home on someone's desk or being part of a larger Jurassic Park or World MOC display—but it was fun enough and furnished some good parts for other builds.

I definitely would have recommended it when it was available at most impulse racks in most major retailers: it was absolutely a good value at $4.
