A neat minifig (with an oversized accessory).
TL;DR:
- Original Price: $3.49
- Pieces: 40
- Minifigure(s): Crust Smasher
- Sticker Sheet: No
- Pros: Low price, minifigure
- Cons: Tiny build, brittle brown
Assembly:
Leftover Pieces
- Interesting Techniques:
- Pairing the 1x2 slope pieces with the flared wings of the 2x4 mudguard piece is nice, forming a smooth curve on the surface (though the mudguard's wings are half the thickness of the slope pieces).
- Pain Points:
- Brittle brown is always a risk with sets this old, and this one was no exception, sadly.
- Play Features:
- The little battle cart has two catapult pieces which can be flicked with a finger to shoot 1x1 trans-orange cones.
• Overall: The price on this set was so low—even with inflation $3.50 would be about $4 or $4.25 today—and even on the resale market it's pretty cheap. It's small enough that the vehicle is practically just an oversized accessory for the minifigure. This sort of polybag is great for little travel toys, stocking stuffers, and similar small gifts; its also a great way to grab a bunch of these minifigures (there are only 16 of the minifigures currently available in BrickLink, for example, but over 100 of the full set) for armybuilding.
The build itself was quick but fun, and were it not for the brittle brown there wouldn't have been any problems (aside from the small size). It does have some good details with the trans-orange grille tiles, but there's not much more that can be done at that size.
I'm glad I was able to find this old set, and it definitely shows how far LEGO has come.
